What records do you need from an accounting firm?

The focus is internal know-how and workflow: engagement checklists, workpaper templates, close procedures, review workflows, knowledge bases, and billing and practice-management history. You don't need all of them. One well-documented system can qualify. The usual bar is 30+ employees, 3+ years of records and a US base, with records kept in real business systems.

Do we give up ownership of our data?

No. You license a copy. Your original records stay in your systems, untouched, and you keep ownership. You approve the exact systems and date ranges in writing before anything is exported, and you can leave out any inbox, folder, tool or period. Nothing leaves until you sign.

How are client, taxpayer and staff details handled?

Taxpayer information and client-identifying data must be removed or excluded, and your firm decides with its counsel what stays out. In the agreed copy, every person, client, company name, address and account number is replaced with a placeholder or removed. That includes your own staff. Social Security numbers and payment details are removed entirely.

How much work is this for our team?

Usually a few hours from whoever administers your practice management, document management and email. There's no cost to you, and you're never invoiced. The buyer pays Renaissance Data Lab a finder's fee when a deal closes. It doesn't come out of your offer and is disclosed in writing before you sign. Typically, it takes about 60 to 90 days from first call to payment.

How do Section 7216, our engagement letters and professional standards affect this?

That depends on your contracts and professional obligations, and we don't give legal advice. Check with your own counsel. The buyer's legal team reviews scope with you before any export. Taxpayer and client-identifying data must be removed or excluded, and you can leave out your tax systems, client folders or any period entirely.

Does the eligibility check commit us to anything?

No. The check is free, takes about a minute and creates no obligation. If you qualify, the final offer comes in writing after a review of your actual systems and data volume. Nothing leaves your systems until you sign.
