AI labs are buying engineering data

Your old engineering files could be worth $100K to $5M.

AI labs license de-identified records from established US engineering and product design firms to train models on real design work. You approve exactly what's included.

How real parts and assemblies get modeled, toleranced and revised

PDM/PLM, SharePoint, shared drives

BOMs and calculation spreadsheets

How engineers size parts, pick materials and check margins

PDM/PLM, ERP, Excel on Microsoft 365

Simulations and test results

How predicted performance compares with what happened on the bench

Simulation project folders, lab drives, SharePoint

Design reviews and revisions

Why a design changed, what was debated and what was decided

PLM change orders, email, Slack, meeting notes

Schematics, PCB layouts and inspection data

How circuits get laid out and how parts measure against the drawing

What engineering records do you need?

Records that show how designs were made and changed: CAD and STEP files, BOMs, calculation spreadsheets, simulations, design reviews and revisions, test results, schematics, PCB layouts and inspection data. You don't need all of them. One well-documented dataset can qualify. The usual bar is 30+ employees, 3+ years of records and a US base, with files in real systems such as PDM/PLM, SharePoint or Git.

Do we give up ownership of our designs or IP?

No. You license a copy. Your original files and records stay in your systems, untouched, and you keep ownership. Before anything is exported, you approve the exact systems and date ranges in writing, and you can leave out any project, folder, tool or period. Nothing leaves until you sign.

How are client names and personal details handled?

Records are de-identified before delivery. Every person, client, company name, address and account number in the agreed copy is replaced with a placeholder or removed. That covers your clients, vendors and your own engineers. Highly sensitive fields, such as payment details and Social Security numbers, are removed entirely.

How much work is this for our team?

Usually a few hours from whoever administers your PDM, file shares and email. There's no cost to you, and you're never invoiced. The buyer pays Renaissance Data Lab a finder's fee when a deal closes. It doesn't come out of your offer and is disclosed in writing before you sign. Typically, it takes about 60 to 90 days from first call to payment.

Our client contracts restrict how we use project files. Does that rule us out?

That depends on your contracts and obligations, and we don't give legal advice. Check with your own counsel. The buyer's legal team reviews scope with you before any export. Client-owned, NDA-bound and export-controlled material is reviewed during scoping and can be excluded.

Does the eligibility check commit us to anything?

No. The check is free, takes about a minute and creates no obligation. If you qualify, the final offer comes in writing after a review of your actual systems and data volume. Nothing leaves your systems until you sign.
